Being Happy

“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

Happiness starts with you – not with your relationships, not with your job, not with how much money you have, but with you. It is not always easy to find happiness in ourselves, but it is always impossible to find it elsewhere.

Each time we see a smiling baby or young child we are reminded that we are all born with this natural and innate sense of happiness. We learn about suffering or unhappiness as we grow older, more externalized, and as circumstances change.

In reality, regardless of the situations we face, our attitude is our choice. We can not have a positive life with a negative attitude. When negativity controls our thoughts, we find it limits our behaviour, actions, and opportunities.

Remember there are people who have it worse. Be charitable, do your bit for humanity, going out of your way to do something for someone else – it all helps, plus it make you feel good as well. Not only will it help others and attract good karma in the long run, in the short term it will give you a great feeling of self worth.

I love the wise words of Thích Nhất Hạnh…Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be happy.

You are responsible for your own happiness. If you expect others to make you happy, chances are you will always end up disappointed. The key to a happy life is taking responsibility to make it.

”Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.”
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus
