A Growth Mindset

.
“To different minds, the same world is a hell and a heaven.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

.
How we experience life, both the good and the bad, largely depends on our attitude about the events that happen to us. Some people see a challenge and start complaining to no end while others see the same challenge and get even more fired up to overcome it.

.
As you approach a challenge, that inner voice may say to you ‘Are you sure you can do it? Maybe you don’t have the talent.’ ‘What if you fail – you’ll be seen as a failure’.

.
As you face criticism, you may hear yourself say, ‘It is not my fault. It was something or someone else’s fault.’ You may feel yourself getting angry at the person who is giving you feedback. ‘Who do they think they are?’ The other person might be giving you specific, constructive feedback, but you may be hearing ‘I’m really disappointed in you. I thought you were capable but now I see you are not.’

.
How we interpret challenges, setbacks, and criticism is our choice. We can interpret them in a fixed mindset as signs that our talents or abilities are lacking. Or we can interpret them in a growth mindset as signs that we need to improve your strategies and effort, stretch yourself, and expand your abilities. It is up to you.

.
So as you face challenges, setbacks, and criticism, listen out for the fixed mindset voice. As you approach a challenge:

.
A fixed mindset says “Are you sure you can do it? Maybe you do not have the ability.”

.
A growth mindset answers, “I am not sure I can do it now, but I think I can learn to with time and some effort.”

.
A fixed mindset: “What if you fail – you will ll be a failure”

.
A growth mindset: “Most successful people had failures along the way.”

.
Remember, people with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. They outperform those with a fixed mindset, even when they have a lower IQ, because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.

.
Take a closer look at what you are telling yourself. Are you holding yourself back or helping yourself grow?  Look to challenge yourself today and learn something new.

.
“Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.”
Steve Maraboli

  1. This is so interesting – I talk so much about mindset, but never really thought about what it really is, so this helped me understand it very clearly. Thank you 🙂
