What’s Important

“Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.”
Stephen R. Covey

So often we are wasting time on unimportant tasks while never getting around to the things that matter. It seems that staying focused on priorities is one of the toughest jobs we all have.

You need to step back and get greater clarity around your key goals for your day or week. If you have not got that you have no context for knowing whether the next task on your to do list is ‘important’ or not.

The ability to select the most important task at each moment, and then to get started on that task and to get it done both quickly and well, will probably have more of an impact on your success in doing the task than any other quality or skill you can develop.

This is an important question to ask yourself: “What are the potential consequences of doing or not doing this task?”

Once you have your goals clear, then the next step is to map out the key actions that you need to take to achieve that goal. In my experience, this is where so many get lost. For many the thought process is “I have now defined my goals, so I know where I am going”. In addition you will need to map out the step by step process that will get you to your goal achieved.

Defining action steps clearly into outcomes and concrete next steps is vital for success. What is the next step you need to take today to get you closer to your goal?

‘Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.’
Henry Ford
